Yesterday we posted on the cancellation of this Friday's consent election for the employees in the Mercy Health hospital system throughout Ohio. The Service Employees International Union (S.E.I.U.) and Catholic Healthcare Partners had mutually agreed to the terms of a expedited election procedure, but cancelled the election due to mounting pressure from a rival union, the California Nurses Association (C.N.A.).
In her comments regarding the halted election, C.N.A. head Rose Ann DeMoro lambasted everyone involved, accusing the S.E.I.U. of sexism, and highlighting a website critical of the S.E.I.U. A report via CNSNews contains more of her condemnations, including a criticism of the S.E.I.U.'s "top-down" organizing method:
that turned decades of labor law rights for employees on their head and made a mockery of constitutional protections of free speech...
One must wonder if Ms. DeMoro feels that way about all corporate campaigns and other top-down organizing methods -- or just those where it appears a rival union has gotten the better of hers.
